About

I hold degrees in Architecture, Urban Planning and Political Sciences and obtained a PhD in social geography at K.U.Leuven. In the thesis insight into the complex inter-relation of factors, focussing on the specific dialectic between housing initiatives and the emergence of social networks, is provided through an analysis of several neighbourhoods in and around Cape Town, South Africa. More specifically, the study focuses on how housing projects, and in particular their set up and organisation, influence the emergence and manifestation of social networks and the related social capital, and how, and if, this is essential to an individual's social mobility.

Next to my teaching activities in theory and sociology, I am doing comparative research in both Europe and the global South on issues that are related to space, politics and architecture, such as the role of universities as anchor institutions but also the possibilities of grassroots mobilisation to influence policy (with a specific focus on housing) and the impact of housing projects on community building.
